OVERVIEW:

Xingxin Hu is a London-based visual artist whose work centers on painting. Drawing from personal and second-hand archives, her art investigates themes of femininity, memory, and identity through depictions of the female body and mundane objects. These subjects are transformed : imbued with intimacy, tension, and quiet monumentality. She creates spaces where desire, alienation, and social conditioning converge. Her deeply introspective practice is rooted in the negotiation between internal perception and external expectation, capturing the psychological residues of everyday life.

Born in 1988 in Hunan, China, and now living and working in London, the artist brings a cross-cultural sensitivity to her work, shaped by her academic background in both law and fine art. After receiving a Bachelor of Law from the Communication University of China, she later completed an MA in Fine Art: Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, UAL. Her work reflects a hybrid sensibility ; one that bridges personal experience with broader cultural dialogues about gender, power, and the body.

Her aesthetic is both vulnerable and assertive, often placing soft, familiar imagery within emotionally charged contexts. In doing so, she reclaims the language of domesticity and female representation, challenging viewers to reflect on the intimate traces left by social conditioning. Through this quiet yet resonant visual language, she constructs a nuanced exploration of contemporary femininity : its forms, its constraints, and its radical potential.

She has exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows across the UK and China, including at venues such as the Bomb Factory, Peter Von Kant Gallery, Transition Gallery, YTHART Museum in Shanghai, and the Guardian Art Center in Beijing. In 2024, she was shortlisted for The Tagli Mentorship Award and selected for exhibitions with OHSH Projects and Blue Shop Gallery. Her work has also been recognized by Studio West, the John Moores Painting Prize, and Art Nova 100, marking her as a distinct voice within the emerging generation of painters.
