OLGA KRYKUN

Olga Krykun is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work bridges the boundaries between video, installation, painting, and object-based practice. Her immersive installations often weave together fictional narratives with culturally resonant symbols, constructing a layered and self-contradictory mythology of contemporary life. Deeply intuitive and emotionally driven, Krykun’s work reflects a distinctly personal visual language that borders on the surreal, drawing viewers into dreamlike worlds where intimacy, identity, and collective memory unfold.

Born in Ukraine and currently based in Prague, Krykun's artistic approach is shaped by her experience of displacement and her engagement with both Eastern European cultural heritage and globalized digital culture. At the heart of her practice lies the generational condition of post-digital intimacy : a constant negotiation between the digital and physical realms. She draws freely from pagan rituals, Slavic folklore, internet aesthetics, and pop culture, combining them into works that radiate raw energy and emotional depth. Her aesthetic is often described as a form of feminist punk, marked by an unapologetic honesty.

Krykun has exhibited extensively across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In 2022, she was named a laureate of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, one of the most prestigious recognitions for young contemporary artists in the Czech Republic. Her works are part of public collections and have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in institutions such as the National Gallery Prague, Museum of Modern Art Warsaw, and the Ukrainian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

Critical Beauty: Olga Krykun on Flowers, Crisis, and Continuance

During this conversation we speak about the role of flowers in her paintings, not just as decoration, but as figures that have taken on personal, historical, and even political meaning. What began as portraits of young women soon shifted after the invasion of Ukraine, transforming into flower-figures that embody both vulnerability and resilience.
