OVERVIEW:

Magdalena Paz is a Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting and philosophical inquiry. Her abstract works unfold as a rigorous and contemplative engagement with awareness, memory, and identity. Each painting a physical response to the questions that have long animated her: What does it mean to belong? How do we attune to the body and the present moment? Born in Santiago, Chile, and shaped by a nomadic upbringing across Nigeria, Egypt, Russia, Argentina, the United States, and beyond, Paz approaches artmaking as both a stabilizing force and a site of improvisational freedom.

Rooted in the artist’s background as both a painter and an athlete, her work embraces the parallels between creative and physical discipline. Each canvas is a field of play, a rehearsal of gestures where preparation meets spontaneity. Paz balances methodical research with intuitive expression, privileging process over product. Her practice resists finality in favor of open-ended inquiry. The viewer is invited into this space ; a quiet act of resistance in a productivity driven society.

Paz’s technique is informed by a deep attentiveness to materiality and form. Her abstract compositions, often layered and rhythmic, pulse with movement. They bear traces of both bodily exertion and contemplative restraint, functioning less as static images than as lived experiences. The works are evidence of time passed in focus, repetition, and recalibration.

Since receiving her B.F.A. in 2012 following studies at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, New York),  the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA) , and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Paz has exhibited internationally, with solo presentations in London and Berlin and group shows across Europe and Latin America. Recent highlights include exhibitions at Monopol Berlin, ExGirlfriend Gallery, and The Ballery, as well as an artist residency with PADA in Portugal.
