Barry Yusufu is a Nigerian artist whose practice centers on intimate, expressive portraits of African figures. Working across charcoal, oil, acrylic, and coffee, Yusufu’s paintings explore identity, dignity, belonging, and the quiet complexity of everyday life. His subjects are drawn from the people and communities around him, transformed through a visual language that places Black bodies at the center of the image with tenderness, presence, and reverence. Rather than simply documenting his subjects, Yusufu uses portraiture to affirm their inherent beauty and humanity, creating images that feel at once personal and monumental.

A self-taught artist, Yusufu began his professional practice in 2017, initially working with pencil and charcoal before developing the distinctive techniques that have come to define his work. His celebrated “Bronze Skin” paintings emerged through experimentation with charcoal, acrylic, and coffee, producing richly layered surfaces and warm, patinated tones that give his figures an almost timeless quality. His expressive backgrounds, meanwhile, create a vivid counterpoint to the carefully rendered faces of his subjects. Together, these elements form a visual language rooted in both observation and imagination, which Yusufu has described through the idea of “Kolo art”—an approach grounded in freedom of expression and emotional instinct.

Born in 1996 in Nigeria, Yusufu has developed an international practice through exhibitions across Africa, Europe, and the United States. His solo exhibitions include Behold, Sun’s People at Luce Gallery in Turin and In Loving Memory of Love at Gordon Gallery in Israel, alongside group exhibitions at institutions and galleries including Unit London, The Breeder in Athens, Opera Gallery in Paris, and UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles. Now based in London while completing his studies at Central Saint Martins, Yusufu continues to expand his exploration of African identity and representation. Across his evolving practice, portraiture becomes a space for presence and reclamation—an invitation to see ordinary people with the depth, beauty, and significance they have always possessed.
